A great way to save money for any task is to do it yourself. On vehicles, taking care of your car at home will save you both time and money. For example, engine cleaning costs more to have done at a business than to perform yourself. Keeping your engine running smoothly is the most important aspect of maintaining your car. Here is a quick tutorial on how to make a DIY engine degreaser.
DIY Engine Degreaser Ingredients
Most people have these ingredients in their kitchen, which makes it easy to make. Gather distilled white vinegar, natural liquid soap, baking soda, and lemon juice/essential oils. You will need water as well, but this can be pulled from a hose outside.
Mixing the Solution
A DIY engine degreaser is simple to mix. The amount you want determines how much of each ingredient you use. However, most people fill a spray bottle with the solution to clean their engines. Mix 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, 1/4 cup soap, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and a couple drops of lemon juice/essential oils. Combine all of these in a bowl and add water.
This combines to create a spray to coat your engine. However, some people prefer a thicker vinegar engine degreaser. If so, add more soap and baking soda to the mixture.
Applying Your DIY Engine Degreaser
Once you have mixed the solution, pour it into a spray bottle for easy application. Spray a layer of the mixture on your engine and let it sit for a few minutes. Once the degreaser has time to penetrate the grime, you can use warm water to rinse away the mixture and dirt.
Finally, use a microfiber cloth to dry the engine before you close the hood. This will keep any moisture from settling into the cracks and rusting.
A DIY engine degreaser is a safer, cheaper alternative to store-bought ones. However, if you would like a spotless engine, schedule an appointment with DetailXPerts. Our technicians are highly-trained in all aspects of detailing including engine steam cleaning.
