Earth Day is the largest, most widely celebrated international environmental event. Celebrating Earth day was intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States founded Earth Day. It was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 in the United States when 20 million people and thousands of local schools and communities participated. The huge turnout made it the largest organized celebration in the history of the United States. Earth Day’s success helped influence the government of the United States to create stronger laws to protect the environment.

Taking care of the Earth may sound complicated, but there are many simple steps that each of us can take to save energy and reduce our impact on the planet. Earth supplies us with all good gifts: nourishment, water, minerals, fresh air, fire, beauty. When we remember this, we become mindful again in our attitudes and actions. Protecting the Earth is every person’s and every country’s responsibility. People traditionally celebrate Earth Day with the ringing of bells, often bells of peace. The tradition of bell ringing is practiced all over the world on Earth Day.

- Brazil: In São Paulo the Nature Conservancy will host community workshops on recycling, reforestation and water conservation.
- China: Qinhuangdao Bird Watching Association and Kunshan Charity Federation will plant nearly 2,000 trees.
- Hungary: Trees will be planted to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Hall-Heroult aluminum production process and the 70th anniversary of the Alcoa Köfém location in Szekesfehervar.
- Iceland : Alcoa employees will beautify and help preserve Vatnajökull National Park.
- Russia: In Belaya Kalitva, Alcoa Russia President, Andrey Donets, will lead an education session for middle school students about the importance of recycling.
- United States: Across the country, many cities will participate in electronics recycling drives to address the growing challenge of e-waste over the Earth Day weekend, April 20-25.
Earth Day provides us with a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and to change our lifestyle so that we can live in harmony with nature.
The younger generations should be made aware of the wonderful elements of nature, while alerting them to the problems faced by our environment at the same time. Earth Day can be a chance to thank the earth for the gifts that it gives on a daily basis. Earth Day is really an occasion to celebrate life on earth.
