Now that the weather is warmer, it might be easier for St. Patrick’s Day celebrators to get out and go to some of the special events being held in their area. Early Irish immigrants – the English, Dutch, German, French and others alike – were the first to celebrate St. Patrickโs Day around 1737. The first civic and public celebrations of St. Patrickโs Day took place in Boston. Strangely enough, Irish Protestant immigrants organized them. The holiday is observed on March 17 and it is the feast day of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick joined a monastery in France, returning to Ireland twelve years later to establish monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches on his journey. It is believed that St. Patrick died on March 17.
A Worldwide Celebration of Irish Culture and History – St. Patrick’s Day
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is more of a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. The day is first a feast and holy day, celebrated with a week-long tradition of festivities. Parades and festivities are important to Irish diaspora, because March 17 affords them an opportunity to state their presence, reaffirm their Irishness and to promote causes important to them such as Catholicism, charity and Irish separatism.
The capital of Ireland, Dublin, has a huge St. Patrickโs Day festival to honor the day. The festival includes grand parades, a community feast, charity show, dance, and carnivals. The parades, shamrocks, and green beer are provided primarily for tourists. In fact, it has turned out to be one of the most celebrated events in Ireland and a major tourist attraction. St. Patrickโs Day is a celebration of being Irish and enjoying things Irish. While it reminds us about Saint Patrick, it also tells us to be Irish. With shamrocks and the leprechaun!
