Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, ‘She doesn’t have what it takes’; they will say, ‘Women don’t have what it takes.’
Clare Boothe Luce
Did you know that women are at least, and often slightly more than, half of the population of every culture? It’s always a great idea to take time and especially on March 8th. to remember where we came from and how we got where we are, today. There have been many women who have broken barriers that have allowed for more women to do things in fields that weren’t always “women friendly” and who also helped more women know that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. Whether its elected leaders or business leaders, champions of the arts or community advocates, famous figures or the everyday woman, we owe a lot to those women, past and present. When women share in each other’s successes, we help pave the way for future generations to become tomorrow’s leaders.
Even though March is Women’s History Month, we need to honor the women that have paved the way for our success not just in March but every day.
The celebration of Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the struggles that women have overcome; to appreciate their outstanding contributions to family life, education, science, medicine, religion, politics and fine arts; and to inspire everyone to persevere and dare to dream. We as American women have the freedom to pursue an education, to have a career, to vote — in short, the ability to choose our own paths in life. There will always be room for improvement, but for the most part, we sometimes forget how good United States has it compared to women in other countries. Women’s History Month is a chance to stop and appreciate that, and to honor the women who got us where we are.
There is only one major day known for a global celebration for women – march 8th.
On the 8th of March every year thousands of events are held throughout the world. The idea of having an international women’s day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century in the midst of rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. International Women’s Day has been observed since March of 1911, making it 100 years of celebration this year. In different regions March 8th, is the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. It is also a time for reflecting on those women who have stood change to create a better life for all, and who we recall in our hearts as courageous and strong.
